Minnesota State University, Mankato President Richard Davenport announced today that the University is in the process of renegotiating a new 10-year agreement with head men's hockey coach Mike Hastings that would become effective July 1 and would extend through June 30, 2028.
It is believed to be the longest-term appointment among all current NCAA Division I men's hockey coaches.
"Mike Hastings has had a significant positive impact on our hockey program and in the community since his arrival five years ago," said Davenport. "Offering a 10-year contract sends a clear signal about our commitment to him and will ensure ongoing stability in the leadership and future direction of our program."
In addition to the term extension, the two sides are still negotiating an increase in compensation and other improvements to the programs, including implementing cost of attendance stipends, staffing commitments and enhancements to the travel and recruiting budgets.
"As part of a thorough review of Maverick men's hockey last summer, we had benchmarked resources against the top teams in other leagues and made a commitment to these future program enhancements," noted Davenport. "We are now operationalizing those plans, which is indicative of our desire to position Maverick hockey to compete as effectively as possible against the very best programs in the country."
Minnesota State Director of Athletics Kevin Buisman believes these steps have helped to secure the future of Maverick hockey.
"There had been some inquiry about Coach Hastings and a request for permission to speak with him about other employment opportunities," said Buisman. "In light of this, we decided to move proactively to secure his loyalty and I feel good about the commitment we have made. These arrangements put us in a great position to further advance the program, as we continue to pursue our ultimate goals."
"The University and this community have been very good to me and my family and I believe it's important for everyone to know that I am entirely focused on developing our current players and our incoming recruiting class for the challenges that lie ahead next season," said Hastings. "I truly appreciate the commitment the University has made to me and the future well-being of Maverick hockey. My intention is to make good on that return of investment and to reward my administration's vote of confidence in what we are doing as a program."
The Mavericks have built a 122-62-16 record for a .649 winning percentage in Hastings' five years with the program. Under his direction Minnesota State has won a pair of McNaughton Cups as Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season champions, have won two Broadmoor Trophies as league postseason tournament champions and advanced to the NCAA tournament three times. A two-time WCHA Coach of the Year, Hastings garnered the AHCA Spencer Penrose Award as the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year in 2014-15. He has had 65 WCHA All-Academic players, 21 All-WCHA performers, seven WCHA All-Rookie Team selections, two WCHA Rookies of the Year, two WCHA Defensive Players of the Year and two of his players have been named All-Americans.
